Give Young People in the World a Voice: Protect the Rights to Privacy, Support, & Autonomy
The Issue
Why this petition matters
Across the globe, millions of young people are trapped in a severe gap when it comes to their basic personal rights. They are mature enough to handle intense academic pressure, master complex modern technologies, and navigate the challenges of growing up—yet the system frequently treats them as having zero right to personal privacy, mental health support, or educational choice.
A young person’s mental well-being and future opportunities should not be completely dependent on the permission of their guardians.
This absolute dependency creates an environment where young people are vulnerable to extreme, unchecked parental control.
Without independent rights to privacy and support, a teenager's daily life can be dictated entirely by domestic double standards and favoritism, where one sibling is granted freedom and support while another faces total surveillance, isolation, and restriction. When the system gives guardians complete control over a minor's digital access, communication, and movement, it leaves young people with no recourse to challenge unfair treatment or protect their own mental health within their own homes.
If a teenager faces intense stress at home, wants to seek confidential counseling, or notices they need an assessment for a learning difference like dyslexia, they can be entirely blocked from getting help by the very people supposed to support them. Furthermore, a total lack of protected digital privacy rights leaves many young people subjected to constant surveillance, cutting them off from safe spaces, friends, and vital support networks when they need them most.
We cannot expect young people to step into the world as independent, confident adults if the system denies them the right to have a say in their own daily lives, protect their privacy, and access basic support when they are struggling.
The Demands
We are calling on international human rights bodies, governments, and educational institutions worldwide to enact three urgent changes
1. Protect the Fundamental Right to Privacy
Establish clear standards that protect a young person's digital privacy and guarantee their right to confidential communication with friends and support networks without constant, invasive monitoring.
2. Remove Guardian Vetoes on Vital Support
Ensure that any teenager can directly request and access educational testing (such as dyslexia assessments), mental health resources, and counseling independently, without requiring parental permission.
3. Create Protected Channels Against Domestic Unfairness
Ensure young people have safe, confidential, and independent ways to access guidance and advocacy when facing toxic, overly controlling, or deeply unequal domestic environments.
