Here in the heart of the tech industry, San Francisco's 8th graders are not allowed to take algebra in 8th grade -- a key step in getting a career in science or technology.

In our public schools, no matter how much a kid likes math, she can't take algebra until 9th grade.

This puts San Francisco's public schoolchildren behind their peers -- unless their families spend their money and time working around the system.  This policy hurts disadvantaged kids.
