Give Seals Space

Give Seals Space
The Issue
The Issue
Are you aware, the UK Government recently dismissed the Joint Nature Conservancy Committee’s (JNCC) recommendation, to legally protect our UK Seals from intentional or reckless disturbance?
Disturbance is a killer!
Disturbance causes avoidable stress, energy loss, sleep deprivation, pain, injury and unnecessary suffering.
We don’t believe this decision was right do you?
The Solution
Please support seals by signing and sharing the Give Seals Space Petition to change the Government’s decision.
Please regularly share the petition link far and wide to your friends, family and networks as every signature is a step closer to protecting our precious seals…. thank you.
The Reality
The UK Seal Alliance urges the Government to review their decision by placing our seals under the protection of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as recommended by the JNCC and others.
This Act is the primary legislation protecting our wildlife within the UK and seals are NOT included within it as protected species.
The UK’s native Grey and Harbour Seals are the heritage species that visit our coastline and are vitally important to the health of the marine environment and our coastal tourist economies.
Like us all seals need rest, relaxation and quality sleep for their own health and wellbeing.
The truth is all females, over the age of five, are likely to be expectant mums, so sleep deprivation significantly affects them as well as their unborn pups.
Sadly, seals are subjected to constant disturbance from land, sea and air which has a chronic and cumulative negative impact on their health and ultimately their survival.
Incidents of seal disturbance continue to rise.
The Future
So, what can we do?
What is it that seals actually need from us?
The simple answer is…they just need SPACE!
That’s why our campaign is simply called ‘Give Seals Space’
For example, social media has sadly had a negative impact as some people want to get too close to resting seals and their pups to take photos at close range on their phones.
A seal’s natural reaction is to get away from this approaching threat to a safer place, usually the sea.
If a pup is separated from its mum, it’s likely to die.
No number of social media likes or hearts can justify an animal feeling scared enough to face death through starvation.
We applaud the JNCC and others for recommending that seals should be protected.
Minor Changes: Massive Benefits
We are asking for just a simple, minor amendment to Schedule 5 and Section 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
We’ll be regularly updating our Campaign to bring you up to date with far more information and news on progress.
As we mentioned earlier, please support seals by signing our Give Seals Space Petition to change the government’s unwise decision.
Then, please share the petition link far and wide to your friends, family and networks as every signature is a step closer to protecting our precious seals.
That is all we are asking, as each signature is giving these animals a voice, a louder voice that needs to be heard.
Thank you so much!
