Give Philip his Olympic spot.

Danish speed skater Philip Due Schmidt achieved an extraordinary accomplishment by qualifying on sporting merit for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in the mass start. He did so under extreme circumstances: after surviving a life-threatening epileptic seizure and coma in 2023, without a professional team, without structural support, and entirely at his own expense. In doing so, he embodies both the true Olympic ideal and the original Olympic spirit.

Despite meeting all official qualification criteria by finishing within the top 24 of the World Cup rankings, Due Schmidt has nevertheless been excluded due to an oversubscription of qualified athletes and an outdated quota system. As a result, Denmark loses one Olympic starting position—his—while lower-ranked athletes are admitted through a loophole in the regulations. This undermines the principle that Olympic participation should be determined by sporting performance and damages athletes’ trust in a fair and transparent system.

We call on the ISU and the IOC to take responsibility, review this situation, and grant Philip Due Schmidt the Olympic place he has rightfully earned at the Milan Winter Games. We also urge a modernization of the quota system so that no athlete in the future loses their Olympic dream due to administrative corrections rather than performance.

Geef Philip Due Schmidt zijn Olympische startplaats!

De Deense schaatser Philip Due Schmidt leverde een uitzonderlijke prestatie door zich sportief te kwalificeren voor de Olympische Winterspelen van 2026 op de massastart. Dit deed hij onder extreme omstandigheden: na een levensbedreigende epileptische aanval en coma in 2023, zonder professioneel team, zonder structurele ondersteuning en volledig op eigen kosten. Daarmee belichaamt hij zowel het ware olympische ideaal als de oorspronkelijke olympische gedachte.

Ondanks het feit dat hij volgens de officiële kwalificatie regels bij de top 24 van de World Cup eindigde, wordt Due Schmidt alsnog uitgesloten van deelname vanwege een overschot aan gekwalificeerde schaatsers en een verouderd quota stelsel. Hierdoor verliest Denemarken één startplek — juist die van Schmidt — terwijl lager gerangschikte atleten via een maas in de regels wél mogen deelnemen. Dit ondermijnt het principe dat olympische deelname gebaseerd moet zijn op sportieve prestaties en schaadt het vertrouwen van atleten in een eerlijk en transparant systeem.

Wij roepen de ISU en het IOC op om hun verantwoordelijkheid te nemen, deze situatie te herzien en Philip Due Schmidt alsnog toe te laten tot de Olympische Spelen in Milaan. Daarnaast vragen wij om modernisering van het quota stelsel, zodat geen enkele atleet in de toekomst zijn of haar olympische droom verliest door administratieve correcties in plaats van prestaties.
