Give Muslim Students A Day Off On Eid And Accommodations During Ramadan
The Issue
Assalamu alaikum,
As a Muslim student, I am writing to express my concern about the lack of accommodations for Muslim students during the holy month of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. Ramadan is a month of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection, while Eid al-Fitr is a time of celebration and gratitude. As a Muslim, I believe it is important to recognize the significance of these events and show support to the Muslim community by providing time off and accommodations during this time.
Ramadan is a holy month during which Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. It is a time for personal growth, reflection, and giving to those in need. It is also a time when Muslims engage in additional religious practices, such as increased prayer and recitation of the Quran. Eid al-Fitr is the celebration that marks the end of Ramadan and is one of the most important holidays in the Islamic calendar. During this time, families and friends come together to celebrate with food, gifts, and prayers.
As a Muslim student, it is important for me to fully participate in these important religious events without having to compromise my academic responsibilities. However, many Muslim students are not provided with time off on Eid and are not given accommodations during the month of Ramadan. These accommodations could include excusing Muslim students from classes or providing extensions on homework and tests, which would allow students to fully participate in the holy month without falling behind in their studies.
According to the New York City Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, there are an estimated 600,000 Muslims living in New York City, making it one of the largest Muslim communities in the United States. With such a significant number of Muslims in our city, it is important that our educational institutions take steps to ensure that Muslim students are not disadvantaged during this important time.
As a Muslim student, I urge you to take action on this issue and provide Muslim students with the accommodations they need to fully participate in these important religious events. Accommodating Muslim students during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr would not only show respect for the Muslim community but also promote diversity and inclusion within our educational institutions.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Abdulaziz Sharipov
