Michigan policymakers are aiming to overrule 3 month summers for kids in order to "lead to more college graduates" and "reduce summer regression in learning". The policy aims to focus on a more year-round school schedule rather than the traditional summer. In order to go to college in the first place, kids need to have sufficient money to pay for tuition and other fees, and with a shorter summer, the amount of time kids have to work and earn money is greatly reduced and could cause major financial issues for some families. Also, with a longer summer, kids have greater ability to spend time outdoors making core memories and sharing valuable family time which in turn, could lead to reduced screen time.  After a long school year of classes, homework, tests, and extracurricular activities, students benefit from having enough time to relax and recharge. A longer break can help reduce stress and improve motivation for the next school year. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, kids need time to just be kids. Students only get 17 or 18 summers before adulthood. Once those years are gone, they can never be replaced. A longer summer break gives young people more time to make memories with family and friends, explore their interests, and enjoy a part of life that passes far too quickly.
