Small businesses are the backbone of Australia. They create jobs, support families, strengthen communities, and bring character to our towns and suburbs. However, the cost of running a small business has changed dramatically, while the GST registration threshold has remained unchanged for almost two decades.
For many small businesses, reaching $75,000 in annual turnover no longer means they are successful or making a good living. It simply reflects the rising cost of doing business in today's economy.
Crossing the GST registration threshold often places enormous pressure on a business that is only just finding its feet. Business owners are faced with an impossible choice: increase their prices and risk losing customers, or absorb the cost themselves and watch their already small profit margins shrink even further.
Behind every small business is a person or family who has taken a risk to build something of their own. They work long hours, miss family time, put their own wages last, and carry the responsibility of paying rent, suppliers, insurance, wages, and superannuation before they ever think about paying themselves.
Many continue because they genuinely love what they do, believe in their business, and want to provide a valuable service to their community. During difficult times, many business owners even go without paying themselves to ensure their employees and bills are looked after first.
The small businesses this petition represents are the places you visit every week. They're the café that makes your favourite coffee, the local restaurant where you celebrate birthdays, the hairdresser who knows your name, the mechanic you trust, the florist who helps mark life's special moments, the tradie who fixes your home, and the family-owned shops that give our towns and suburbs their character.
These businesses are not large corporations. They are run by hardworking Australians who have taken a chance to build something of their own while providing jobs, supporting local families, and giving back to the communities they love.
Small businesses are the heart of our towns and suburbs. They sponsor local sporting teams, support school fundraisers, create local jobs, and keep our communities thriving. They deserve the opportunity to grow, become sustainable, and build a secure future before being burdened with additional GST compliance, reporting, and administrative requirements.
Increasing the GST registration threshold to $150,000 would give small businesses the opportunity to grow stronger before taking on these additional obligations. It would help keep local businesses competitive, encourage entrepreneurship, create more jobs, and strengthen communities across Australia.
It's time for the GST registration threshold to reflect today's economy, not the economy of 2007.
This is not about asking for special treatment. It's about giving hardworking Australians a fair opportunity to build sustainable businesses, support local employment, and continue serving the communities that rely on them every day.
