Give Domestic Abuse Victims Control Over the Length of Their Restraining Orders

Give Domestic Abuse Victims Control Over the Length of Their Restraining Orders
The Issue
As a survivor of domestic abuse, I know first-hand the impact that a restraining order can have on a victim's sense of safety and wellbeing.
Despite suffering numerous attacks at the hands of my ex-partner, and fighting for over 2 years for a conviction, the courts only agreed upon a 5-year restraining order - I had absolutely no say in the length of this.
Since then, I have been fighting the CPS to agree to change my restraining order to another 15 years, an extremely long and arduous process. This experience has compelled me to initiate a campaign for victims to be heavily involved in the decision-making process regarding the length of their restraining orders.
In 2024, nearly 1.6 million women and 712,000 men were victims of physical violence by a partner in the U.K (Office of National Statistics). Many of these victims find security in restraining orders, but are discluded from decisions that affect their safety. It is unjust to leave the victims out of this critical stage, and their voices need to be heard.
By signing this petition, you will help give victims the power to decide how long they need their abusers to stay away for their peace of mind.
Their safety, their choice.
Please sign and make a stand for the rights of abuse victims.
