Give Dick Van Dyke his EGOT!!

Give Dick Van Dyke his EGOT!!
The Issue
Dick Van Dyke has had one of the most decorated and storied careers in Hollywood history. From starring in cinema classics such as Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, to pioneering television with staples like The Dick Van Dyke Show and Diagnosis Murder, to flexing his dramatic abilities with lesser-known gems like The Comic, and a heartbreaking performance as recovering alcoholic Charlie Lester in 1974’s The Morning After, Van Dyke has proven that his range as an actor is second to none. This begs the question - Why has Dick Van Dyke never been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Oscar for his contributions to cinema, pop culture and entertainment history?
With only one award away from achieving the distinguished EGOT status, Van Dyke is no stranger to receiving accolades, and deservedly so. The first of which dates all the way back to 1961 when Van Dyke won the Tony Award for originating the role of Albert Peterson in the smash Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie. He then became one of an elite few performers to win four consecutive Best Actor Emmys for his work in Carl Reiner’s brilliant Dick Van Dyke Show, which ran from 1961-1965. His Grammy win came on the heels of The Van Dyke Show in 1965 for the soundtrack of Disney’s beloved film Mary Poppins. Other awards include achieving Disney Legend status in 1991, The SAG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 and The Kennedy Center Honors in 2020.
Van Dyke’s work not only speaks for itself, but the man’s influence on pop culture, and therefore the world, is broader than one might expect through his inspiration on such luminaries as Jim Carrey, Ted Danson, Bryan Cranston and Conan O’Brien. Van Dyke’s signature moves can be seen re-enacted on the silver screen as recently as in Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog Movies, in which Jim Carrey recreates a classic Van Dyke move where he appears to be dancing with no head.
Dick Van Dyke has devoted his life to the joy of others and that light has never dimmed. His influence and contribution to the entertainment landscape ranks among such iconic names as Lucille Ball, Orson Wells and Mel Brooks.
