Give Children the option to wear pants at St Joseph's Primary School Christchurch

The issue

My son is 8 years old and struggles going to school. He was diagnosed with Dyslexia last year, and school can be hard for him. Every morning we go through the reasons he doesn't want to go to school:

  • I want to wear pants
  • It's too hard
  • I can't do it
  • It's boring

His reasoning is why can't I wear pants? I get cold, the girls can wear tights. To be honest, I don't have the right answer for him. I agree with him; I don't know how to answer that.

For me I want to get one of one of my hurdles in getting him to get dressed in the morning. But I also want him to feel like he is listened to and that I am not just saying this because I am a mean Mum.

I think they should have the option.

Many children feel more comfortable and warm wearing pants, especially during colder months. Giving them this choice could improve their overall school experience and attendance.

The reason I am doing this form is I went to the school to ask if we could have an exemption. was happy to obtain a medical certificate but I was told it needed to go to the BOT. They advised they did not want to set a precedent so would need to discuss at the next meeting at the end of the month. I thought that if I could present that other parents would like to have the option for their children and it shouldn’t be just because they have issues.

Please sign this right to have the option form, if you support giving students at St Joseph's Primary School Christchurch the option to wear pants as part of their uniform.
