Give bereaved families the right to request a police reinvestigation

The Issue

In 2021, my son, Edward Cornes, was brutally murdered. As a mother, the pain of losing a child is indescribable, but what followed was even more devastating. The Metropolitan Police swiftly dropped the case with no reasonable or justifiable explanation. The only viable conclusion I could reach was the stark reality that my son's sexual orientation led to a dismissive investigation.

This is not just about Edward. Thousands of families across the UK deal with a similar fate. When a case is dropped without a valid reason, families are left with questions, anguish, and an overwhelming sense of injustice. In many instances, there is no recourse or avenue to seek further investigation. This has to change.

We are calling for legislative reform that allows bereaved families and loved ones to request that a different police force reinvestigate homicide cases if the original investigation is terminated unjustifiably. This solution will ensure that all cases are treated with the gravity they deserve, devoid of bias or prejudice.

According to the UK Office for National Statistics, there are approximately 600 homicides annually, and too many of these cases go unresolved. Discrimination, whether based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or any other factor, should have no place in law enforcement. By granting families the right to request a reinvestigation, we bring hope to countless individuals seeking justice and accountability.

This petition is not just about reopening closed cases; it's about trust in our police forces and restoring faith in the justice system. By supporting this petition, you are taking a stand against discrimination and for the right to justice for every family across the United Kingdom.
