The Issue

The OSHAA Recently just sanctioned girls flag football as an official varsity sport. This is a great opportunity for the growth of a sport underrepresented for women and would be an amazing addition to Athens High School. Girls at Athens have shown a great amount of overall interest in playing this sport, more than enough to make a team. Please sign this petition so we can show our school that the community and student body of Athens supports the creation of a girls flag team.

“Good morning, We began exploring the formation of a flag football team early last school year. To assess feasibility, we first contacted other schools regarding their interest before surveying our own students. Athens administrators then proposed the idea at a regional conference meeting with neighboring school representatives. Currently, there is insufficient support to add flag football due to scheduling challenges at the local and regional levels. Amy competition would require traveling over an hour from Athens, creating additional transportation issues. Consequently, we are unable to introduce flag football for the 2026–2027 school year. While we anticipate that flag football will eventually take root in southeast Ohio, widespread adoption is some time off. In the meantime, we encourage the formation of a club-level team composed of athletes from Athens and neighboring districts. Please note that the Board of Education would need to approve any use of the Athens City School District name in connection with a club team.
