Reinstate Elizabeth Steffel as leader of Girl Scout Troop 4029

The Issue

Problem
Reinstate Elizabeth Steffel as leader of Troop 4029. Firing her because of this is appalling and not in line with the spirit of the Girl Scout way.

A local Girl Scout troop leader has lost her job apparently over a dustup with scout management over a fundraiser her troop held for families of victims of a fatal crash near Chippewa Falls.

“I’m an emotional wreck,” a weeping Elizabeth Steffel said Monday afternoon. “I just got fired this morning.”

Steffel had been the leader of Troop 4029 since helping to found it three years ago. She said the troop has 53 members, with many of the girls coming from an at-risk home environment. Now she doesn’t know what’s to happen to the troop.

The members helped host vigil a couple Saturdays ago in Green Bay in honor of three Chippewa Falls area scouts and one parent who were struck and killed while collecting trash along a rural highway earlier this month.

The vigil raised donations of cash and canned food, and Steffel helped launch an additional fundraiser involving the creation and sale of a special commemorative badge.

The exact nature of the disagreement with scout management is unclear. The Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes has a policy that forbids it from commenting on an individual’s employment or volunteer status, communications director Lee Snodgrass said.

That leaves Steffel’s account and that of her supporters on social networks. Supporters are claiming she was fired for holding the vigil, and Steffel says it was for opting to raise money directly for the families of the crash victims and not being willing to filter it through the scout council.

Steffel claims she learned from Chippewa Valley troop leaders and an area school guidance counselor that the preference out there was for direct donations to the victims’ families.

She claims local Girl Scouts officials told her such fundraising must go through the organization and that, otherwise, fundraising must be disassociated entirely from the scout organization.

She opted to treat the project as an individual project by her troop, even though some other area troops were participating.

“It wasn’t just my troop,” she said. “I’m getting scapegoated because I’m the one who posted it in social media. I think about 12 of us decided this together, and we decided together to go with donating directly to the families.”

She said she made certain it was publicized as a troop project, not as a project supported by Girl Scouts-USA or the local council.

“I thought I was doing everything right, I really did,” she said.

Solution
Reinstate Elizabeth as troop leader and apologize.

Personal story
I am the mom of a brownie and also a member of Girl Scouts. I am seriously considering pulling my daughter from Girl Scouts and no longer being a member.
