Legalize aftermarket window tint in Rhode Island

The Issue

Fellow Rhode Islanders, I welcome you to sign this petition. This petition is an attempt to get the state of Rhode Island to stop enforcing outdated and over reaching automotive window tint laws. The current laws state that an automobile is not to have any darker than 70 percent light transmittance. 70 percent is basically still clear.

We live in a time where the average car costs well over 30,000 dollars. Car interiors cost a fortune to reupholster and fix cracked dashboards. Window tint can be used as a protective film to keep expensive interior components out of direct sunlight, which prolongs the life of dashboards and fabrics.

Car break ins and theft have been on the rise in Rhode Island for the past few years. Having darker windows that cannot be easily seen through at night may help to deter a thief from breaking windows if they cannot see anything of value inside.

It gets hot in Rhode Island in the summer months. On average, your car will be up to thirty degrees hotter than the outside temperature if you are parked in direct sunlight with clear windows. Having tinted windows on cars has been shown to bring down interior temperatures dramatically. Many of us have children in car seats. I have personally measured the metal buckles on car seat straps at 163 degrees Fahrenheit in Rhode Island.  This is a danger that could be reduced dramatically with something as simple as window film.

Please sign this petition with me, and try to make one small step towards a safer and more free Rhode Island.
