Creswick to Long Point walking and wheel path

The issue

Creswick-Ascot Road, running west from Gilles Road & the Long Point Nature Reserve, into the heart of Creswick is increasingly busy.

It is used by trucks, fully loaded utes and trailers carting materials to the tip  and of course residents accessing the town centre from the west.

Creswick-Ascot road is used by families dropping their kids at Creswick day care and kindergarten, and families dropping their kids to school.

Older kids ride their bikes along this road to get to school, or walk along it to bus stops servicing regional high schools.

Other members of the community walk this road for recreation or to connect with neighbours/the town centre, including older residents and parents with prams.

It is the main east-west route servicing the train station and tip.

But the road is not safe for pedestrians or cyclists.

There is no walking or cycle path until you reach Elizabeth Road, and cyclists and pedestrians are forced onto the road, competing with trucks and tip traffic often going over 60km per hour.

We are Creswick residents who are seeking Council's support to extend a gravel walking and cycling track along Creswick-Ascot Road Creswick from Gillies Road to the Township of Creswick to:

  • increase safety of children and adult pedestrians/cyclists
  • increase safety of pedestrians on a busy tip-run route, which also frequents trucks and cars doing over 60km/h despite being a 60km zone
  • support healthy active lifestyles, linking residents and tourists to town, schools, kinder, shops, railway station and places of significance eg the Long Point Nature Reserve.

You can share your support for this initiative directly with council by completing the Council's current integrated transport strategy survey here:

https://participate.hepburn.vic.gov.au/future-hepburn/transport

Installing a walking trail in this location also aligns with Council’s Strategies and policies including the: Walking and Cycling Strategy, the Active Women and Girls Strategy, the Sustainable Hepburn Strategy.
