Gig Workers Deserve Benefits from Employers

The Issue

Gig workers employed by corporations like Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, etc. are not offered benefits, insurance, workers comp, and are not covered by labor protections. Many people start working gig jobs in order to have a flexible schedule, and for financial stability as "traditional" jobs are often inconsistent with hours and scheduling. Gig workers are classified as independent contractors but are still controlled by companies, while receiving none of the benefits of being employed by a company. Big corporations like the ones listed above do not have to give insurance and benefits to their employees through patchwork in laws, and are fighting to not give these things to their employees.

Let's use Uber as an example. Uber is expecting their employees to risk their own safety and let strangers into their cars, but will not give them any protections, how is that moral?

It seems that corporations are forgetting that without drivers, there is no more Uber, no more Lyft, etc. And if they do not start giving their employees benefits, people are going to stop working for them, and the business will not be successful.

In order to improve conditions for gig workers, we need politicians and labor unions to listen to the experiences of people who have worked for these apps, so employees can get real access to things such as healthcare and paid leave.
