Gift Giving for Sustainable Living

The Issue

Gifting is an age-old practice that builds connections among us. However, during the holiday season we generate 25% extra trash.

Does such a sacred practice have to be harmful to our planet? Understanding the negative impacts of buying new ‘stuff,’ does not mean we cannot celebrate the season of giving! There are many alternative ideas for meaningful gift giving.

“I pledge to protect the environment by gifting:

  • Experiences and time together to build meaningful memories (e.g. movies, skating, painting, cooking, gardening, pottery studio, etc.)
  • Homemade sustainable gifts (e.g. fruit baskets, plants, meals, DIY candles/body scrubs, homemade sauces, soups or cake mixes, etc.)
  • Functional compostable items used in the household (e.g. 100% green toothbrush, cleaning products, floss, soap, etc.)
  • Previously owned items (e.g. books, board games, jewellery, clothing, toys, etc.)
  • Time and efforts to noble causes that help the planet (e.g. volunteer together, plant trees, food/ clothing drive, start composting, etc.)
  • Funds for the future (e.g. college or travel fund, donations to planet advocacy organizations, etc.)
  • Acts of service (e.g. remove snow, mow lawn, work on lasting projects, etc.)

I am inspired to give gifts in a way that is not harmful to the planet.

I will share this pledge with others.”
