Thank you all for your continued support with our tiny homes. Shockingly there has been complete silence from the city officials in response to our every effort to reach out to them to discuss the matter. We are truly disheartened. As citizens of Alachua that try to benefit those around us and have always approached city officials with a mood of cooperation and openness, we are still in complete shock that they would come, aggressively shut down our business without following proper due process, and then give us absolute no outlet to comply, and no one to speak to.
The deadline they have given to us to remove our tiny homes from all properties or face utilities being shut off to our homes approaches this week, and despite our every efforts they have not been willing to speak to us, to give us a chance to have the tiny homes inspected, to give us a chance to prove there is no safety issues, or to give us a chance to get the tiny homes up to code if there is indeed any code violations they find (which there has not yet been because there has been no inspections done).
They left our hands tied with absolutely no choice but to either shut down our business completely, or take legal action to force a response from them.
Already, several of our employees have lost their jobs, hundreds of guests have had to cancel their travel plans to the tiny homes, and our family has taken a financial setback due to the loss of income of our Airbnb business.
We have had other local citizens reach out to us to describe the unreasonable actions Building Official Tim Hunt has taken on their small businesses as well, and we have had other citizens mention to us that they have personally inquired from city officials why they have not responded to us, and the officials claimed they have never heard anything from us.
It is sad and unfortunate. Today we officially filed injunctions for temporary relief, asking the judge to prevent the city from shutting our utilities off and allow our tiny homes to remain on our properties until a determination is made; as well as a request for declaration on the subject of the definition of our tiny homes and how they can be used.
We will continue to keep everyone updated as things progress. Please continue to share and sign this petition to bring awareness and support for small businesses in Alachua. As citizens and property owners and business owners, we have rights, and we will not stand by and stand complacent to abuses of power.
Thank you for your support!
