John Werner started this petition to Giant Food and

Going to Giant Grocery Stores used to be a pleasant enough experience. The smiling faces, the fresh and exotic fruits, the sensible prices. This all changed with the arrival of Marty. The smiles are now a little more forced...perhaps etched in anxiety or fear. Inflated prices, to pay for Marty's insatiable energy appetite. We want Marty gone so that we can shop in peace.

I cannot tell you how many times I have walked through Giant and seen Marty roll into some honest person's way, forcing their heavily laden cart to a halt; how many times I have seen Marty corner a school-aged child and beep and wail and howl at them until they back away in confusion; how many times I have seen Marty make shoppers generally...uneasy.

Bottom line: we don't appreciate robots calling us on the phone with the manipulative promise of student loan refinance - and we don't appreciate robots stalking the aisles of a once-community grocery store.

Besides all of the above, Marty consistently gets in the way and makes shopping a more difficult experience. Her incessant beeping is annoying and it is deeply offensive that she just rolls around notifying employees of problems over the intercom. Subservience to a machine is always galling, and it is doubly so when the machine is not at all effective. Marty consistently gets stuck and misidentifies what is going on around the store, which becomes yet another problem for the underpaid staff. To add insult to injury, Marty's purported cost (thirty-thousand dollars!) is a slap in the face in an era of low wages and high costs.

I sincerely hope that whomever created Marty feels a deep and pervasive sorrow. All the waste, all the lives ruined, and for what? Our cause is just, our voice is clear: end Marty now!
