Ghirardelli Chocolate is the second oldest chocolate maker in the United States, and one of the most highly regarded by consumers around the world. And yet, the cocoa they use to make their chocolate bars has a very dark side. Millions of children concentrated in Ghana and Cote d'lvoire, Africa are suffering on cocoa farms as child laborers every year -- and Ghirardelli is using them to make a profit.
Their educational opportunities are diminished and chances of escaping poverty slim as they work long hours under extremely hazardous conditions with little pay.
But Ghirardelli can make a difference. If they take a stand and refuse to work with cocoa farms that utilize child labor and unsafe work practices, both consumers and the international community will take notice, and other companies will follow. We believe that as a leader in the chocolate industry, Ghirardelli has both the opportunity and the obligation to take a stand to help end this horrifying practice.
We are raising awareness in order to raise fairnessand we demand Ghirardelli CEO Marty Thompson fair trade certify their chocolate products in order to ensure fair pay to farmers, eliminate child labor, empower communities, and build a foundation of opportunity in education around the world.
Quality chocolate = Quality trading practices
