For too long, the FDA has failed to protect our food from toxic chemicals that can lead to serious health problems in children and adults. President Biden’s nomination of Robert Califf to serve as FDA Commissioner offers an opportunity for the agency to change course and protect our families from toxic chemicals in our food. • Close the loopholes that allow the food industry to decide which toxic chemicals can be in food without the FDA’s knowledge
• Ban the “forever chemicals” known as PFAS in food packaging that accumulate in the human body
• Update older science to be able to better test foods for toxic chemicals
• Reassess the safety of the chemicals in our food

How have things gotten this bad?

Rather than banning toxic chemicals from food, the FDA has put the food companies in charge. The result is that toxic chemicals may be lurking in the food we feed our families. And even when the FDA does act, the agency relies upon outdated science that ignores many of the risks posed by toxic chemicals like PFAS. Once these chemicals are approved, FDA fails to independently reassess their safety — even when credible new information of hazard comes to light.
