This started when my 7 year old grand daughter was told to stand outside the school playground, away from the gates, to wait for the transportation company to collect her.  Despite a meeting with her teacher, and email to the Principal and a local new paper article, the school did not comment and the situation has not changed.  Schools are currently not responsible for the safety of our children after they have left the school premises, neither are our children permitted to stay on school premises after schooling hours, while they wait to be collected safely.  

This week is Child Protection Week in South Africa.  No better time to start this action.  I acknowledge that schools can not be responsible for children who walk home without adult supervision, (that is a challenge for another time), however, children who are collected by a responsible adult or a professional lift service must be protected until that Adult arrives AND be handed over in person to that adult by another responsible adult. 

I already have a simple solution that all Primary schools can implement to make this process simple and not time consuming. It is just a matter of ensuring that Government make it a legal requirement to be done, or each school can  implement this system out of good governance and because they share the responsibility of our children's welfare.

Everyone is shocked and outraged when a child is kidnapped off of our streets, raped, murdered and desecrated.  Albert Einstein said " The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing".  Let us not be the people who sit back and do nothing.
