Get the local skate park lights operational
The Issue
Growing up, skating has been an integral part of my life. It’s more than just a sport or a way to pass the time; it’s a sanctuary where I, along with countless others in our community, find solace and an outlet for self-expression. Skating helps me channel my energy positively, cope with stress, and maintain a balance. For many teenagers who are grappling with mental health challenges, this skate park is more than concrete and metal; it’s a lifeline.
Our local skate park, once a hub for creativity and community, is now shrouded in darkness come sundown due to broken lighting. The unavailability of functioning lights has severely restricted usage of the park, compromising a safe space where individuals, especially teenagers, come to unwind and socialize in the evenings. With mental health struggles on the rise, it is critical for our community to support and provide outlets that foster wellbeing and inclusion.
The importance of the skate park goes beyond just skating. It provides individuals with the opportunity to meet like-minded peers, form friendships, and share experiences, which is crucial for personal growth and mental health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in five teenagers experiences mental health issues, and having access to supportive communities can be a pivotal part of their recovery and resilience.
To address these concerns, I call upon our local government and community leaders to take immediate action to repair and operationalize the skate park lights. This simple yet impactful action will extend the park's useable hours, allowing more young people to use the space safely.
