The City of Lakeland, Florida opened a brand new skatepark on May 18th 2013 at Lake Bonny Park which is called the Lakeland Skatepark and it is still fairly new. They had the perfect schedule, open at 10am and close at 10pm perfect for everybody. On February 10th one of the skate park supervisors told local skaters that it would be closing at 8pm due to complaints. Many of the locals get off of work at around 6 so that would only give them 1 hour a day to skate. But knowing most people after you get out of work you like to eat dinner so that takes up another hour and then essentially there would be no time for them to skate at all! For most of the skaters who work everyday, going to the skatepark is the only thing they look forward to. Now many of them will start trying to skate around the city or have to only go skate about a few times in the month just because they have to migrate to other skateparks that are far away. The Lakeland skatepark is an out door park so in the day time it gets ridiculously hot out and the perfect time to skate is late afternoon and night. I recently talked to some of the parents and they are upset to see this happen because they want their kids to be active and the only thing their kids want to do is skate. The only time most parents are able to take their child to the skatepark is at night after they have gotten out of work and had dinner. The skaters of Lakeland and their parents want their skatepark to go back to its original times so everyone can still have a chance to skate!
