The Issue

A study was recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition which showed an examination of the products released by the top 25 food manufacturers (Dunford and Calvo 2025). It found that roughly 56% of the food and beverage products released by manufacturers contained some form of organic and inorganic phosphorus. Phosphorus has a number of benefits to the body, but it can also be harmful to individuals suffering from certain medical conditions like chronic kidney disease, bone diseases, and those with elevated parathyroid hormone. Manufacturers not listing the amount of phosphorus on the label makes it difficult for individuals with diseases to restrict the amount they receive in their diet. This petition is not aiming to change the amounts of phosphorus in manufactured foods. The aim of this petition is to get the FDA to require food manufacturers to add the amount of phosphorus to food product labels.
