Get Mental Health Education Classes in Schools

The Issue

Hello. My name is David James Rusnak. I also go by the stage name "Wittle Dabid."

From an early age I knew there was something wrong with me. It's the classic debate of nature vs. nurture. It may have been a combination of both.

I grew up not fitting in, especially in Physical Education class. I didn't know how to play the games and had low self-esteem. As a result, I failed P.E. several times, even being kicked out of class to the point of tears.

I would sit on the bleachers in high school, watching my peers have fun, while it was a living h*ll for me. I played games like Animal Crossing: New Leaf on the Nintendo 3DS. It was my escape.

I remember being told that "nobody likes me," and I was "the classic fat*ss." These thoughts drove me into a lifelong depression.

It seems every day we see more and more school shootings, violence carried out by what I would argue as cowards with w*eapons.

We talk about gun reform in the United States of America. Where I do see validity in banning assault rifles, we have the second amendment for a reason. (I will also add we have the first amendment for a reason too!) Our great country is in danger.

The solution is simple. Get mental health education classes in schools. Perhaps this could be a choice, or an elective.

During my time in intensive in-patient and out-patient therapy, I have learned that the way we process emotions and feel them is genetic. This was a breakthrough in understanding both myself and others.

We could have an option, maybe. Imagine if we had a system where students at early ages (even elementary school) could choose between Physical Education and Mental Health education. Or maybe they can switch off by semester. I got this idea while looking back at how civics and economics would switch off to teach both subjects to high school students at my previous New Hampshire school.

By understanding mental disorders, we can be a helping hand to each other and create a more positive community, and a safer one.

Please consider signing our petition to end this violence and to make sure voices are heard. Thank you for your time.
