Get free oral syringes for medications in all sizes
The Issue
As someone who is physically disabled, I face significant challenges when trying to manage my medications effectively. Pouring liquid medicine into a measuring cup is simply not an option for me due to my disability. The straightforward solution would be the use of oral syringes, which allow for precise dosing with little physical effort. However, the NHS currently limits the provision of 20ml and above syringes only to those who are tube fed. This policy excludes many individuals, like me, who also need this essential medical tool.
The reality is that numerous individuals across the UK face similar difficulties in accessing oral syringes in sizes they need. Whether due to disabilities, age, or other health conditions, people are left struggling to manage their medications or are forced to purchase these items themselves. This is not only unfair but poses a health risk as precise dosage is crucial for the effectiveness and safety of many medications.
According to disability advocacy groups, there are upwards of 11 million disabled people in the UK, many of whom may benefit from broader access to oral syringes of various sizes. Allowing everyone, regardless of their method of feeding or condition, access to free, adequately-sized oral syringes will ensure that medicine is taken correctly and safely.
Therefore, I am calling on the NHS, Manx government and Manx care to change their policy and include free oral syringes in all sizes as part of their standard medical supplies. This policy update is necessary not just for the sake of convenience, but for ensuring the health and safety of all service users who rely on liquid medication and to remain independently as they can in their own homes. These medical tools are not luxury, they are a necessity!
