Get Fixed & Average Speed Cameras to North Yorkshire - Petition to the NYCC and NY Police

The Issue

CAMERAS SAVE LIVES!!!!!

Petition NYCC and North Yorkshire Police to finally introduce fixed and average speed cameras - they are proven to be more effective!!

Fixed and average speed cameras are proven to be more effective and yet there are none in North Yorkshire.  39 of the 43 police forces in the UK make use of them but North Yorkshire, which has over 6000 miles of roads refuses, using ONLY mobile speed cameras.

There are less than 50 traffic officers covering over 6000 miles using mobile speed cameras which are only effective when they are on site, and never at night.

Villages across North Yorkshire are blighted by speeding, racing and dangerous driving.  The many crashes that occur are disregarded and ignored if there is no serious injury or death and don't result in prosecution, and no other regard is given to safety or quality of life of residents.

And yet, according to the York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership - Safer Road Strategy 2021 - 2026 https://www.northyorkshire-pfcc.gov.uk/content/uploads/2021/12/Safer-Roads-Strategy-Dec-2021.pdf

  • speeding offences made up 85% of the total motor related offences in 2019 in North Yorkshire
  • speeding offences increased 25% over the past 5 years in North Yorkshire
  • there are 1 million extra miles being travelled each year in North Yorkshire
  • 57% Killed Seriously Injured (KSI) collisions occur in 60mph zones
  • 28% KSI collisions occur in 30mph zones
  • Each fatality costs £2.1 million (...and unimagined heartache!!!)

Fixed and Average Speed Cameras are more effective!

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Road Safety Fact Sheet March 2021https://www.rospa.com/media/documents/road-safety/speed-cameras-factsheet.pdf reports the following;

  • Number of people killed and seriously injured fell by 50% at fixed camera sites and only 35% and mobile sites
  • Number of vehicles exceeding speed limits fell by 70% at fixed camera sites and only 18% at mobile sites
  • Excessive speeding fell by 91% at fixed camera sites and only 36% at mobile sites

Lancashire's example proves the point for Average Speed Cameras

"EIGHT routes across Lancashire that were installed with Average Speed Cameras between March 2017 and August 2018 have proven to have reduced both collisions and casualties and since the average speed cameras were introduced, speeding offences have reduced by more than half.

Analysis of the impact the average speed cameras have had in the 2 years since they went lived demonstrates that they have been successful in reducing the number of speeding vehicles on all 8 routes, with some, such as Grane Road, having huge success, reducing detections of excess speed by over 70%"
