Get Fairfax County Public School to change the website filter

The Issue

Every student has been there – you find a website that finally helps you understand a complex subject or offers a fun, educational tool to explore, then suddenly, it’s blocked by Lightspeed, the web filter used by Fairfax County Public Schools. For countless students, this cycle of discovery followed by disappointment is becoming an everyday frustration.

Many students and parents share this sentiment, feeling saddened and stifled by the restrictive nature of the current web filter. The intention of a web filter is not to hinder students but to protect them and provide a learning environment that is conducive to education and growth. However, the current filter system, Lightspeed, often blocks websites that are instrumental in a student’s learning journey and are otherwise safe and beneficial.

This petition seeks to urge Fairfield County Public Schools to reconsider their choice of web filter. Instead of using Lightspeed, we propose investigating alternative solutions that balance safety with accessibility. Alternatives exist, some offering customizable filter options that allow educators to adapt web access according to educational needs while maintaining online safety protocols.

Changing the web filter could lead to a more enriched educational experience, encouraging students to explore, learn, and engage more freely with the enormous resources available online. This can only be beneficial to all stakeholders—students, teachers, and parents alike.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a school environment that fosters not just safety, but also allows educational exploration and growth. Join us in calling upon Fairfield County Public Schools to make a change, for the betterment of our children’s future.
