Get Coach Keith Johnson Back at SWD

The Issue

Prior to the last days of the Southwest DeKalb School Year 2022, Principal Dr. Thomas Glanton facilitated in the removal of Keith “Coach” Johnson (pictured holding Wrestling Sectional Trophy) due to him voicing his opinion concerning reoccurring problems at the school. Not only has Dr. Glanton removed a pivotal piece of SWD history and encouragement, but he has abused the powers he is given as a DeKalb County School Leader. Coach Johnson alone has held Southwest DeKalb Students to higher standards since he began working at Southwest DeKalb. Being campus security, a leader in his community, and at Southwest he made it his mission to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. Dr. Glanton has done but a fraction of what Coach Johnson has for the students of Southwest DeKalb and the actions he took with removing Johnson is disgraceful to the community Johnson set prior to him becoming principal. Coach Johnson has been in the DeKalb County School District since 1995, and has been a staff member at Southwest DeKalb since 2006. In addition, he is the Head Wrestling Coach at SWD winning (11 Region Titles, 6 Individual State Champions) inspiring others that they can achieve greatness. He has volunteered at numerous events in the DeKalb County community such as upgrading the facilities at the high school. One of the many would be the most recent bleacher campaign for the new and improved Track and Field. This has not been the only incident where Dr. Glanton has removed a teacher from Southwest over a minor dispute, but this has become common. We are asking that the DeKalb County Board of Education investigate Principal Dr. Thomas Glanton’s practices as a faculty member, as well as an administrator. We are asking the Panther Family and the DeKalb County School District to Re-instate Coach Keith Johnson to his position at SWD and the DeKalb community.
