The Issue

Once a source of jobs and pride, the former GM site is now an unsecured, toxic eyesore of half‑demolished buildings amongst a maze of open pits and manholes, crumbling tunnels, and toxic debris and waste... a danger to our health, the environment, and future redevelopment.

Using existing bylaws, City Council could compel the new owners to secure and restore the property to acceptable, safe condition. Yet fencing is inadequate, dangerous structures and debris remain and known poisons are leaking into our soil and air.

The Coalition for a Better St. Catharines asks you and your neighbours to sign this petition urging City Council to:

  • Require the owners to secure the property against trespass and harm
  • Enforce all applicable bylaws to complete the safe demolition of remaining derelict structures and ensure a full, professional cleanup of rubble, debris and toxic materials NOW

This is not political; it’s about public safety, environmental stewardship, and respect for our community.

We also call on Ontario Environment Minister Todd McCarthy to:

  • Resume and expand pollutant testing around the site
  • Release clear public data on air and groundwater quality
  • Ensure remediation meets or exceeds provincial standards for future use

We deserve transparency and action. Every signature tells City Council and the Province that neglect is unacceptable.

Please sign and share this petition. Let’s hold both levels of government accountable and protect the heart of our community for generations to come.
