Start Beach Stablization On Hatteras Island (Buxton NC) Beaches Immediately

The Issue

The Beaches In Buxton Nc Need Stabilization Immediately To Save The Businesses And Homes And The People In The Path Of The Ocean.

At Every High Tide Or Strong Winds, The Roads, Businesses And Homes Are Being Put Into Harms Way From The Surging Ocean. This Can Be Stopped By Replenishing The Sand On The Beaches In This Area And Needs To Be Done Now.

Sand Being Taken From Other Areas ie:Oregon Inlet, Hatteras Inlet Causing The Erosion(NCDOT'S own documents),Should Be Brought To The Beaches Of Hatteras Island ie:Buxton, Rodanthe And Other Hatteras Beaches, To Stabilize The Now Deplenished Beaches Lacking Ample Amounts Of Sand And Dunes.

We Are Not Asking Or Wanting Dredging To Be Stopped In These Inlets,As They Are Of Importance To The Local And State Economy. Just Take The Sand That Is Being Dredged From Them, And Have It Placed Onto The Beaches That Have Erosion And That Are Lacking Substantial Dunes.

Our Beaches Have Not Had Nourishment Since 1973 And Hasn't Even Gotten Emergency Nourishment To Protect Our Only Highway 12 And Our Lifeline. Millions Of Dollars Are Spent Dredging The Oregon Inlet And Hatteras Inlet, But Not One Dollar Has Been Spent To Stabilze The Beaches On Hatteras Island.

Erosion Continues To Occur On A Daily Basis To These Beaches With Nothing Being Done To Stabilize The Erosion Taking Place From Just High Tides And Wind Blown Waves.

Nothing Has Been Done Here In Buxton To Prevent The Next Disaster, It Is Beyond Time That This Needs To Be Done, And Help The People In Buxton NC To Rest Assure, That They Will Be Able To Have A Safe Place To Live And Conduct Business, Or Get Off The Island God Forbid There Is Another Major Storm, That WILL CUT THEM OFF Unless Beach Nourishment Starts Now!!

There has been an inlet in Buxton, NC three times in the past, the latest one was in 1962, known as the Ash Wednesday  storm. Today the same area about 1/2 mile North of the Buxton motels where the island is the most narrow, the ocean has cut into the small dune and is trying to create another inlet. When this inlet happens, and without immediate beach nourishment it will happen, the island's water, electric supply will be cut.

There is no ferry access from Buxton to the mainland. The entire oceanfront of Buxton is in critical condition. Losing these businesses and rental homes will cut jobs, tax money for the state, but more than anything it will be the last straw for many people that call Hatteras island their home.

The beaches of Hatteras island are the infrastructure that is needed to survive, just like roads and bridges.  Va. Beach has had 49 beach nourishments since 1951, Hatteras island has had only one, in 1973. It has been 41 long years since any form of prevention has been done. Other states have already received their beach nourishment projects but NC seems to only react to disasters instead of doing what all other coastal states do, protect their coastlines and understand the importance they bring.

I hope you will sign this and share it, let's show support for Hatteras island and make this go around the world. It's time for a change!
