The Issue

My mother never had the opportunity to receive an education. Growing up, she was denied the basic right to learn, a situation that has affected her deeply. Now, living in Australia, her lack of formal education impacts her ability to find fulfilling employment, and her mental health suffers from the insecurity and restriction this has created in her life. I fear that countless Afghan women are destined for the same struggles if the current educational restrictions remain in place.

In Afghanistan, the Taliban's governmental policies continue to deny women and girls access to secondary and higher education. This decision not only limits their personal growth but also holds back the potential progress of the entire country. Education is a fundamental human right and an essential element in lifting communities out of poverty, empowering women, and achieving economic stability and development.

According to UNESCO, globally, every additional year of schooling increases a person's income by up to 10%. This demonstrates that education is not merely a personal benefit but a catalyst for broader economic improvement. Educated women contribute significantly to their families and communities, bringing enhanced skills and perspectives that are essential for societal growth and stability.

We call on the Australian government to exert diplomatic pressure on the Taliban regime, urging them to allow girls and women to attend secondary schools and universities freely. By restoring educational access to Afghan women, we pave the way for a brighter future for them and their society. Australia has a strong history of supporting global human rights and equality, and now is the time to act in alignment with these values.

Please join me in urging the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs to address this critical issue. By doing so, we can help foster a future where Afghan women are empowered through education, directly contributing to the prosperity of their communities and the world.

Sign this petition to demand change and help Afghan women access the education they deserve.
