Include all musical acts that performed in '69 on the monument at Bethel Woods.
The Issue
PROPOSAL FROM THE WOODSTOCK NATION:
* To include on a new, small plaque which is to be installed directly below the logo of the Catbird perched on the guitar neck on the Woodstock monument at Bethel Woods Center: 4 missing musical acts out of a total of 32 acts that performed at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair in August of '69, as well as listing the 4 Producers who together formed the dream team to make Woodstock happen.
* Listing the Landowner who permitted Woodstock to take place on his property on the Woodstock monument’s existing bottom plaque.
* Correcting minor misspellings and/or data inaccuracies on the current plaques.
* Ensuring that the information on all plaques is historically accurate and preserving the structural integrity of the monument envisioned by the sculptor, while keeping his signature on the stone tag front and center to cement his idea and lasting legacy.
Bert Sommer for example, who at the time was also cast member of the hit musical “Hair”, performed a 10-song set on August 15, the first day of the festival. His version of Simon and Garfunkel's ballad "America" received a standing ovation. In Artie Kornfeld's memoir 'The Pied Piper of Woodstock' he recalls the moment as "simply electrifying," writing that Paul Simon had later said to me that Bert's rendition [of 'America'] was better than "Simon and Garfunkel's". Sadly, his name is not listed anywhere on the current Woodstock monument. It was an unintended omission by sculptor Wayne Saward, but the fact remains that Bert’s name was inadvertently left off of the monument. It deserves to be included! It would be proper in our opinion to honor Bert’s memory, as well as the 3 other missing acts: Tim Hardin, Quill, and The Keef Hartley Band, so that their musical contributions would also be remembered by the present and future generations as well.
Omitted Performers: Bert Sommer, Tim Hardin, Quill, and The Keef Hartley Band
Unlisted Producers: Artie Kornfeld, Michael Lang, John Roberts, and Joel Rosenman.
Unlisted Landowner: – Max Yasgur - whose name was initially included on the plans for the recasting of the large bottom plaque after the original version was stolen - is to finally be added. The people who contracted the sculptor to perform the work had demanded the removal of Mr. Yasgur’s name in order for the final version of this plaque to be approved. Their two names were then listed on the large plaque. They had nothing to do with Woodstock. The sculptor, Wayne Saward, had always believed that Max Yasgur’s name deserved to be there. Now it will be.
This effort has gained much attention. Many Woodstock veterans like performer Arlo Guthrie and The Hog Farm’s Lisa Law have already endorsed this petition, as have family members of the omitted/unlisted, Woodstock ’69 attendees, music aficionados, and history buffs everywhere.
Please join us by signing this petition and offering your support for this noble cause to correct history for future generations - and become a part of Woodstock's legacy yourself in doing so.
We also plan to honor the following people in a yet-to-be determined fashion, either nearby or in and around the immediate area of the Woodstock monument:
Swami Satchidananda (Opening Address / Benediction); John Morris and Chip Monck (Stage Announcements / Master of Ceremonies); Bill Hanley (Sound System); Joshua Light Show (Lighting); Hugh Romney - aka Wavy Gravy, Lisa and Tom Law (The Hog Farm Collective) and others who helped to make Woodstock an experience to remember.
