Allow Preferred Names on Student ID's At GSU
Allow Preferred Names on Student ID's At GSU
GSU's policy of forcing their students to have their legal name on their student ID's rather than allowing preferred names is discriminatory and insensitive. Being called by one's legal name can be very uncomfortable and upsetting for many people. For example, forcing a transgender student to be referred to by their dead name can be triggering and degrading. GSU likes to call themselves an "diverse" school, but this policy actively harms those who differ from expected norms. Everyone should have a right, no matter what the reason, to be called what they want to be called. A legal name change is a lengthy, taxing, and expensive process, and one should not have to go through that to be called their preferred name.
