Georgia’s current state flag is the original Stars and Bars Confederate flag. It is imperative we consider changing the flag, it is disrespectful to the people of Georgia. The Confederacy symbolizes the oppression of Blacks and enslavement of our people. Georgia’s current flag is a symbol of hatred and should be changed immediately. Georgia’s state flag is a representation of hatred and the white supremacy movement, it does not represent all of Georgia’s residents and ignores the disrespectful connection to African Americans. All 8th grade students in Georgia are required to study Georgia’s history, which includes the history of the state flag. It is insensitive to teach students of color about the history of Georgia’s flag when the flag still to this day represents hatred and oppression. Georgia’s flag should be changed from one of oppression to one of inclusion!
