The Athens-Clarke County Board of Election has been summoned by the Secretary of State to an emergency meeting. The crime? Using their local authority as the board of election to protect a voters’ right to ballot secrecy.

Sign this petition to show your solidarity with the Athens-Clarke Board of Elections who had the courage to put voters rights over the convenience of the state.

Voter secrecy is in the law. It is not optional. What is optional is the active voter suppression Governor Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger engage in on a daily basis - closing precincts, purging voters, slow-rolling the processing of absentee ballots.

The Secretary of State will claim that local board of elections are the main administrators when it’s convenient for them, pushing responsibility onto local authority to make many decisions regarding how to administer the elections, but threatens the local boards when it is politically convenient for them. We’re tired of their games pushing the blame onto others.

The fact is that the state rolled out BMDs that failed to meet a very basic requirement: voter secrecy. Furthermore, the implementation of these new machines was an unfunded mandate, financially burdening local governments and leaving local BOEs struggling to properly implement the new system.

The machines did not arrive until the last possible second, leaving little time to prepare. From lack of electrical outlets to lack of space at many precincts, local boards received little to no help on how to deploy new machines. Athens-Clarke Board of Election recognized the security issues and decided the voters right to vote and secrecy was more important and enacted Plan B.

Now is the time to stand up for what’s right. Sign the petition and show your support today.

If you can, show up Wednesday at 9:15 at the Georgia Center, 1197 South Lumpkin Street, Room K-L. The hearing starts at 10 and we are going to pack the room and put pressure on the state.

The Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections voted to use hand-marked paper ballots in order to protect a voter’s right to ballot secrecy. They did the right thing and now they’re coming to take it away.
