Georgia Rideshare Drivers Demand Fair Pay & Dignity

Georgia Rideshare Drivers Demand Fair Pay & Dignity
The Issue
Justice for Georgia Rideshare Drivers
TO:
Governor Brian Kemp | Georgia General Assembly | Georgia Department of Labor | Atlanta City Council | Mayor Andre Dickens | City of Savannah | Uber Technologies, Inc. | Lyft Inc.
We, the undersigned rideshare drivers of Georgia, are calling for urgent, statewide reform.
We are the workforce that powers this state — transporting residents, tourists, patients, students, veterans, and essential workers. We keep Atlanta moving through its airport, nightlife, and stadiums. We serve smaller cities like Augusta, Columbus, and Macon where transit systems fall short. And in return, we are treated like machines: disposable, voiceless, and unprotected.
Georgia must do better.
🚨 What We’re Facing:
🚽 No Restroom Access — At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport — the world’s busiest — drivers must wait hours in a rideshare lot with only a plastic porta potty. There’s no drinking water, no handwashing station, no ADA access, and no shelter from heat or storms. Similar problems exist in cities across Georgia.
🪙 Poverty Pay — Uber and Lyft take more than 50% of each fare. After gas and expenses, many drivers make less than $9/hour. Meanwhile, riders are paying more than ever.
❌ No Due Process for Deactivations — Drivers are permanently deactivated after false rider reports — with no explanation, no evidence, and no way to appeal. Disabled drivers with speech impediments or hearing loss are especially targeted.
🧍 Oversaturation — There are simply too many drivers on the road. Uber and Lyft keep onboarding new ones to flood the market. This lowers everyone’s income and forces many to sleep in their cars.
✅ What We’re Demanding (Statewide):
1. Permanent Bathrooms at Major Driver Hubs
- ADA-compliant restrooms at ATL rideshare lot
- Access at other major city staging zones (Savannah, Augusta, Columbus)
- Drinking water, shaded seating, 24/7 maintenance
2. Georgia-Wide Minimum Driver Pay Floor
- $1.50/mile and $0.30/minute minimum
- $17/hour after expenses
- Uber/Lyft commission capped at 25%
- Fare breakdowns must be transparent and visible
3. Real Appeals Process for Deactivations
- Independent board of drivers, attorneys, ADA advocates
- Decisions within 7 business days
- Drivers must be shown all evidence
- ADA-related flags must be reviewed before deactivation
4. Statewide Cap on Active Rideshare Permits
- Prevents driver oversaturation and starvation
- Protects full-time, veteran, and disabled drivers
- Reduces traffic and emissions
5. A Georgia Rideshare Driver Bill of Rights
- Restroom access laws
- Pay transparency
- Appeal protections
- ADA and civil rights enforcement
- Right to representation through a Driver Council
6. Creation of a Georgia Driver Support Office
- In-person support hub for driver issues
- Emergency help during wrongful deactivations
- ADA assistance and legal referrals
- Funded by a small rideshare fee
📣 Georgia Must Lead — Not Fall Behind
Other states have already acted:
- New York City: pay floors, driver caps, ADA protections
- Seattle: paid sick leave, appeal board, driver resolution center
- Illinois & California: legal enforcement of deactivation transparency
- Denver: driver support funded through a local rideshare tax
If they can protect their drivers, so can we.
