The name of the teams and Mascot are the REBELS. During the games the “Dixie” song is played. This community needs to heal from so much past hurt from our progressing nation. The symbolism of the confederate flag is offensive and has no place in the learning environment of our children. Many children that play high school sports say that they are offended and feel that their voice should be heard and that this change needs to happen for the city to heal and bond closer to dismiss the political and socioeconomic tensions that have plagued this town for many years. At one time the confederate flag was displayed inside of the trophy case inside the school but students are afraid to speak up of the heritage being in the south, it’s 2020 positive change is what we strive for. This petition is for the Effingham County School Board to intervene and remove the High School of ALL Confederate themes. In Effingham County, Georgia our students aren’t REBELS they’re scholars. Together WE CAN accomplish MORE.
