Tell GA Dept of Ag NO Ear Tags for Pet Pigs!

The Issue

beings who are not property or an object, but living individuals. Our sole purpose is to provide them with a life of freedom. We understand the importance of keeping communicable and potentially deadly diseases out of GA, but these pigs will never be bred or eaten. They are not a danger to the swine industry or other pig farms. They rejected our request for microchips or tattoos (which would be done under sedation). We take great strides at Outsiders to ensure our pigs live a long, happy, healthy life. We spay/neuter, vaccinate, and also provide spay/neuter assistance to owners in need. We are making great strides not only for the pigs at Outsiders, but potbelly pigs across the state. Placing an ear tag on these pigs is not only infringing on their freedom as sentient beings, but puts them at risk for infection and injury and will spread the wrong message to our support base that we are handling pigs as numbers and not individuals.

Please sign this petition to tell Georgia Dept of Ag that pet pigs should not be required to wear an ear tag. We beseech them to accept our microchip offer. It would be no more difficult to track than a tag. Each microchip number would be stored in a spreadsheet and linked to each individual test/test result. There is no need to traumatize these rescue animals with an ear tag when a microchip is just as good for identification purposes and several other states accept this as a form of ID for potbelly pigs.

Additionally: We are having several Dept of Ag members out to see our operation on Monday July 13th. We are hoping that they will see our quarantine barn ( that we are scrambling to finish as we were not anticipating a pre-licensing inspection so soon) and see what measures we are taking to be responsible and help so many potbelly pigs in Georgia. We are in need of financial support to offset the cost of testing ($60 per pig), microchipping, and bringing the Quarantine area to GA Dept of Ag standard.
