DeGioia: Pay all campus workers!

The Issue

Dear President DeGioia,

We acknowledge the University’s commitment to Ignatian values of social justice--including “Value of the Common Good,” “Social Justice,” and care for the whole person--and its role as a leader in the Jesuit community. During these trying times, we believe these Jesuit values should inform the University’s response to the pandemic and remind us that we are bound together as a community.

As Georgetown University community members, we call on Georgetown University to continue to pay all university workers (both subcontracted and directly employed) and ensure that university contractors can extend health insurance coverage and pay lost wages to campus workers affected by the university closure.

Some universities, such as Harvard and Yale, have stepped up to do the right thing by their food service workers. You have the power—and opportunity—to set the tone for all universities to do right by the workers who can’t afford to miss a single day’s pay. We hope that Georgetown will be true to its Jesuit values and lead by example during this time of crisis.

Sincerely,

The undersigned members of the Georgetown University community
