Stop the sale of all rabbits over Easter

Stop the sale of all rabbits over Easter
The Issue
Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the UK and yet are one of the most neglected and abandoned. At this time of year parents happily take their children into their local pet shop to choose a fluffy bunny to take home with them for Easter. However, 80% of bunnies bought for Easter are either given up or die from neglect in their first year. With 67,000 rabbits entering rescue centres every year and online selling site become littered with posts for rabbits needing a new home due to the novelty of owning a rabbit wearing off or the financial and time commitments of a rabbit being far greater than anticipated. These are just more examples of how we as society see animals as a disposable luxury which can be thrown away as quickly as we chose to buy them.
In Scotland the rights of rabbits are being addressed so why are we not doing the same in England? A national pet shop has chosen not to sell rabbits over the Easter weekend which is a brilliant start but to me it is not enough. All this will do is create an opportunity for breeders to make more sales of their 'stock', adding to the problem of more and more rabbits bred purely for profit. Yes there are people who will put their hearts and souls into the responsibility of owning a rabbit but unfortunately the reality is that the large majority of people are not ready for the commitment of owning a rabbit and their children definitely aren't.
The sale of rabbits over the entire Easter period should be banned and enforced as thoroughly as possible. If you are that devoted to getting a rabbit at Easter then people should head to their local rescue centre and save one of the abandoned bunnies that last years Easter purchasers have chosen to 're-home'.
