Close the Bellgrove Hotel and provide adequate accomadation for Glasgow's homeless

The Issue

The plight of the Bellgrove Hotel is a shocking social issue which has seen Glasgow's homeless and vulnerable living in dire and squalid conditions using social security money. Two owners are raking the benefits but have let this establishment turn into no less than a doss house. Every person deserves a clean and safe enviroment and then mabye the drink and drug issues can be dealt with head on. We owe it to these people to remove them from this depravity where their problems will grow.

Many thanks to all those who have signed this petition and expressed their concern for the vulnerable residents of the Bellgrove Hotel. I spoke at the Council's Licensing Committee on October 22 concerning the HMO licence renewal but I accept that their room for manoeuvre was limited. I also asked the Scottish Government a question on November 6. Despite the widespread coverage of the Bellgrove Hotel by the BBC, Record, Evening Times and others over many years, progress has been painfully slow. Next I hope to have a debate in the Scottish Parliament about this but I do not yet have a date. As far as I can see, the City Council, Scottish Government, and UK Government all have a role to play in resolving this. Social Work could be intervening more, there could be more regulation, and the DWP could be imposing more conditions when they write the cheques. Thanks again for your support and please keep up the pressure on all three levels of government.
