CURB WATER CRISIS IN INDIA 2019
The Issue
INDIA IS FACING ONE OF THE MOST SERIOUS AND MAJOR WATER CRISIS WITNESSED IN THE INDIAN HISTORY
After two consecutive years of weak monsoons, 330 million people — a quarter of the country’s population — are affected by a severe drought.
According to the Composite Water Management Index (CWMI) report released by the Niti Aayog in 2018, 21 major cities (Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and others) are racing to reach zero groundwater levels by 2020, affecting access for 100 million people. Nearly 75 percent households in the country do not have access to drinking water on their premises, while around 70 percent of the freshwater available in the country is contaminated. Speaking on the crisis, water conservationist and environmentalist Rajendra Singh said, “This is the most severe crisis in the history of the country. Earlier, there used to be a crisis of food and other things, but today, we are struggling for water. As many as 256 districts in 17 states are in the red zone."
It's high time when we take note of it and start doing bits on our part as a responsible citizen before India is hit by one of it's worst droughts' in the history.
