Petition to not have 82 minute periods next year in Millburn High School.

The Issue

Dear Millburn High School Administration,

As students of Millburn High School, we believe that the implementation of 82-minute periods next year will have a negative impact on our education and well-being. We urge you to reconsider this decision and instead maintain the current 41-minute period schedule. Or, we can switch to a 60 minute per period block schedule.

Firstly, research has shown that longer class periods can lead to decreased student engagement and attention span. According to a study by the National Education Association, students tend to lose focus after about 20 minutes of instruction. With an 82-minute period, students may struggle to maintain their attention for the entire duration of class.

Furthermore, longer periods can also lead to increased stress levels for both students and teachers. A study by the American Psychological Association found that prolonged exposure to stress can have negative effects on mental health and academic performance.

In addition, with only four classes per day under an 82-minute schedule, there is less opportunity for students to explore different subjects and interests. This could limit our ability to discover new passions or career paths.

We understand that there may be reasons behind this decision such as reducing transition time between classes or providing more time for in-depth learning. However, we believe that these potential benefits do not outweigh the drawbacks mentioned above.

Therefore, we respectfully request that you reconsider implementing 82-minute periods next year at Millburn High School. We hope you will take into account our concerns as well as those expressed by other members of our school community.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Andy Herscovici, Yuvraj Chaudhary, and Veer Chander
