Stricter policies for dog groomers to prevent harmful, often fatal, treatment of animals
The Issue
Our 4 month old 7 lb miniature went into a mobile groomer for his first groom. Leo was happy, healthy, and alive when he went into Paw Prints Mobile Groomer (in Seabrook, TX) van and an hour later when he was returned never recovered from it. He died within hours, on our living room couch before we could get him into our vehicle to an emergency veterinarian as we and our 3 children watched in horror and gut wrenching pain.
Leo was taken for a necropsy, with the report showing that he passed from a diaphragmatic hernia, that he was not born with. The trauma he suffered in this groomers care was the equivalent of an animal being hit by a car or falling from a very high place. We are now in the process of taking legal action against this company and the groomer; the owner of this company is actually also the groomer Leo had to suffer with handling him. His pancreas was swollen, his spleen, his stomach had protruded into his diaphragm. Truly horrendous what suffering he went through in an hour with this woman.
This has been extremely unfortunate and traumatic for not only our beloved Leo, but our family as well. There are no required qualifications for these people calling themselves groomers and lovers of animals and licenses are handed out freely without any background checks. Things Leo and his family have learned the hard way.
This should never happen to any animal or any family. People making their living from working with animals should be strictly "vetted" and any resulting injury or fatality they cause should have immediate and strict punishment. There ARE steps that can be taken to help prevent unnecessary and harmful treatment of our beloved pets; if we push hard enough for them to be put in place so as to deter these types of people from becoming present in our and our animals lives.
