The Issue

We urge you to stop this project now and engage with wider community groups and local businesses to explore how this public golf course can be used to help develop the town as a whole. This proposal risks further entrenching a division between the golf course and wider community and as such is contrary to the charitable mission of CGLMC. (Carnoustie Golf Links Management Company). We believe this project will divert finances away from the community and represents a failure on the part of the trustees to best meet their obligations. As stated by the retired Head of Economic Development for Angus and former Chair of Business Gateway Scotland Board who also headed the public sector team components of the 2007 Open this is a flawed proposal based on false assertions that has been unduly rushed https://www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/local/angus-mearns/185950/carnoustie-links-defends-business-plan-ahead-crunch-meeting/ The proposal threatens wider hospitality trade in Carnoustie. The proposal will see a new restaurant and bar open just yards from the existing hotel and golf clubs and will compete with these backed by the finances of a public golf course for which you pay no rent. Experts and former directors of CGLMC believe this proposal unduly risks the finances of the golf course itself - a risk that, if the projections are not met, will fall to all those who play golf including season ticket holders. We believe this may mean golf is more expensive not more accessible and that much needed improvements to the driving range and other urgent golfing facilities may be at risk. Ask yourself a simple question, is there really a shortage of places to get a drink or a meal?  The existing hotel and golf clubs have capacity and Carnoustie has fantastic pubs and restaurants - CGLMC should be looking to support these, not threaten them.
