Gender Neutral Graduation for District 202 in IL / Training for Gender Variance Awareness
The Issue
Establish a gender neutral promotion ceremony for all schools in PSD 202 IL. and provide training to teachers and administrators on how to support gender variant students.
1) Gender Neutral Graduation: Having a gender-based dress code for the promotion ceremony runs the risk of some students feeling alienated. Every student should have the opportunity to be included in school activities without having to make themselves stand out more or be "outed" by having to ask to "be an exception" for milestone events like graduation or promotion ceremonies. The only choices for students who may be gender-variant are to either not participate or silently agonize because they don't want to be left out. Segregating, targeting, or isolating people whose gender does not conform to traditional stereotypes or expectations leaves students without the support they need to succeed in school.
2) Training support for teachers and administrators: District 202 has phenomenal teachers, however, they are not provided with training on how to handle the issues that surround transgender and gender variant children. Help the teachers to be more successful by providing additional training on transgender, gender-variant, and gender-diverse youth issues they may encounter, and give them the tools they need to successfully support these students. Today more and more kids are coming forward at a younger age and many of the grade and middle schools are not prepared for it. Everyday language used with gender conforming kids can cause gender variant students angst. School comprises a large part of our children’s lives, it is incredibly important to make schools safe and supportive places for transgender and gender-variant youth.
