The Issue

Inmates indicted on felony charges in the United States are ineligible to pursue certain professions due to their criminal past. This is a major issue because if the U.S. prison system was focused on rehabilitation as they say, inmates should be allowed to pursue any profession they choose considering they should be a different person after being released from prison. In addition to that many inmates use their time to study and earn degrees in prison. This process is useless if they aren't able to partake in the career they choose despite them being extremely qualified. Without anywhere to turn for money inmates are left with little to no resources. Without opportunity and a new chance inmates are likely to become multi-time offenders after being released.

Once a person is released and has served their sentence, they repay their debt to society. Their past shouldn't be held against them and quite certainly shouldn't set them back further in life than they already are. Inmates that choose high risk careers should also have an opportunity to have their record expunged. Risking their lives for the well-being of others goes beyond showing that they have experienced a spiritual rebirth and deserve a second chance.
