Many nations and states have given up or have not been enforcing laws that are put on commercial fishermen and vessels. According to Oceana, “scientists estimate that as many as 650,000 whales, dolphins and seals were killed around the world each year throughout the 1990s as a result of bycatch.”  And this number has risen due to higher demands. this has a huge effect on the ocean because it removes key species from the habitat which causes other species to disappear because they don’t have enough food. If this fishing trends continues we will see virtually empty oceans by 2048 according to the New York Times.

also, the nets have been left in the ocean which trap animals and kill them long after the nets have been used. Another problem from comercial fishing is bottom trolling. when these huge nets drag across the floor it destroy all vegetation and leaves a dead waste land behind. This is a problem because ocean vegetation holds 93% of CO2 in the world.

A solution to this is to resort to fishing with a gold old fashion line and hook. This may drive up prices temporally, but in the long run the price for fish would also rise if we continue to use nets because there won’t be enough fish. This will allow us to catch fish with out harming other wild life and it won’t leave huge nets in the water that were littered by commercial fishermen.

i love fishing for fun and sustainably catching fish. What I hope to do is to get enough support to meet with my cities representatives and then get this issue to governor Newsom and get this issue solved. I hope that you can at least take the time to read and share this. Thanks for your time
